When I was a wee baby pre-therapist, someone once said to me, "there's no such thing as altruism" and at the time I was super offended. It felt contrary to the work I did and why I did it.
I understand now that what he meant was that people essentially do things because of how it feels. If it feels good, we tend to repeat it. Later on as I learned more about whatmakes me feel good (or not) I realized I am the most selfish person I know because I am a DEEP feeler.
I feel ALL the things. Especially in this work. And that's made it really hard sometimes.
When I finally found the right combination of a good therapist, a lovely mentor who believed in me and the RIGHT kind of work that didn't burn me out, it made all the difference.
